The Hamad International airport is the new international airport of Doha, which is also the capital city of Qatar. This airport was opened back in April 2014. During the time of the construction, it was known as the NDIA. The Hamad has replaced the former Doha as the new international airport of Qatar. Doha was located just five kilometres away from the Hamad.

The Doha features 60 check-in counters, 42 parking bays for the planes and 8 conveyer belts for the luggage. However, the Doha Airport suffered from overutilization despite the fact that it was expanded quite a number of times.

Doha Airport – The largest airport of Qatar

Prior to the opening of Hamad, the capacity of this airport was 12 million passengers every year. It had a runway that was 14,993 long and that was the longest for any of the civil airports around. It also used to be the main base of Qatar Airways.

This was frequently used by the foreign workers for the oil and the gas sector and the Qatari holiday makers. With the expansion of the Qatar airways, the leading Doha Airport transactions too increased and more people started using this airport. In fact, in the year 2010, this airport qualified as the 27th busiest airport of the world in terms of cargo traffic.

All commercial air traffic has now been shifted to the new airport. It has been decided that the Doha Airport will be demolished and a new urban project by the name Al Sahan city will come up here.
